Game Recap

USCAA men’s basketball no. 2 and 2011 Division 1 defending National Champion Southern Virginia University defeated no. 8 U-Maine Fort Kent 89-65 on senior day at SVU in a top 10 regular season match-up.  The game was the last regular season game for UMFK (17-9), who now must wait until this Friday evening February 24, to find out if they will get one of a possible eight at-large bids to the 2012 USCAA National Championships March 6 – 10 in Uniontown, Pa.

SVU (14-9) will return to the USCAA National Championship to defend their 2011 National Championship. However, UMFK, no. 8 in this week's Top 20 Coaches Poll, will have to wait until Friday when the USCAA national office offers 8 bids (all at-large) into the eight team men's D1 tourney. Tuesday was the last day for USCAA teams to play games which count towards the bids.

In beautiful Buena Vista, Virginia the host Green Saints jumped on UMFK early going up 10-2 out of the gates. The Bengals were playing their second straight top 10 USCAA D1 opponent on the road after losing at no. 6 Apprentice on Monday. SVU (14-9) was playing on senior day on their home floor where they have now won a school record 20 straight games going back through the last two years. SVU has enjoyed a perfect 10-0 season inside the rowdy Athletic Center called “The Barn.”

Following the early SVU run, UMFK played the hosts even and went into the half down eight at 40-32. UMFK would then trim the lead to five with just over 16minutes remaining but SVU promptly went on a 23-2 run and were not threatened again. Senior Manny Odugbela led UMFK with 19 points and junior Pablo Llamas had 17. Senior power forward Othniel Hyliger recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

Field goal shooting proved to be the difference as UMFK shot just 24-65 from the floor (37%) with just three from downtown while SVU connected on 36 of 68 for 53% shooting including eight from deep. SVU was led by senior Spencer Briggs who had a team-high 18 in a return from injury.
