Recent Highlights

Coach Bird will enter his fourth season in 2017-2018 at UMFK as Head Men's Basketball Coach. The 2016-2017 season was historic in more than one way for the Bengals. In November of 2016, his team went into Orono, Maine to face the University of Maine Orono, an NCAA Division I school, and won a thriller, 80-75. This was the school's first victory over an NCAA Division I team and UMFK was one of only three non-DI teams to defeat an NCAA Division I in 2016-2017. The Bengals also earned their first ever #1 seed at the USCAA National Tournament and won the school's first ever national tournament contest by defeating Dean College in the quarterfinals. The semi-final round ended in heartbreak for UMFK as they lost to #4 seed Illinois Tech in double overtime. The Bengals finished with 23 wins, tied for the most victories in a season in over 30+ years.

He led the MBB team to 20 wins in 2015-2016 season, more than the past three season combined. His first season the team won 10 games, which was more than the combined total from the two previous years before his arrival. In his second season as volleyball coach, he led the team to the USCAA National Tournament in Canton, New York for the first time in school history. The team upset #3 seed Alfred State in the first match of the tournament and made it to the quarterfinal round. In his first season the the volleyball team won a school record 23 matches in 2014.

Among his other duties are Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director for the school. Bird brings several Maine ties back with him after a couple of years away at Division I Basketball programs. He graduated from Lee Academy as the second All-Time leading scorer in boy's basketball and was a semi-finalist for the Maine Mr. Basketball award in 2007. Following High School Tom went on to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Sport Management from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. While there enrolled in school he also served as an assistant coach for the Women's Basketball team, where he sister Karin led all of NCAA Division III in scoring her senior year. After graduation Bird spent a year on the staff of Amanda Butler in Gainesville, FL at the University of Florida as an assistant video coordinator. In his most recent stint, he served as Director of Basketball Operations for North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
