Fort Kent, Maine-- Selina Castro, in two seasons as a head coach, has accomplished more than many coaches have in their entire career. One National Coach of the Year award and a National Runner-Up finish in back to back seasons shows that Coach Castro knows what she is doing. With another small but strong roster, Castro and the Women’s Volleyball team are eager to begin their quest for the programs first National Championship.

The team has three returners from last year’s outstanding team, and four newcomers. Getting the new with the old to blend and get on the same page will be one of Coach Castro’s primary goals.  Coach Castro said, “Having a small roster is something we are accustomed to from last season. Obviously we’d love a few more ladies on the team but recruiting with the pandemic going on was a challenge and it limited the number of people that were willing to commit to Fort Kent.”

Castro continued, “Considering we don’t play until the Spring, we are fortunate to be in a situation to where we can really make a lot of growth and really build strong relationships with one another before we play games.”

The delayed start also is allowing Coach Castro, as well as the other UMFK coaches, to recruit potential student athletes for the Spring. “With everything going on, recruiting and pandemic, the focus remains on building relationships with my players and guiding them towards success on and off the court.”

Coach Castro and the squad cannot wait to get into game action, as they have been working out in the weight room and doing volleyball drills for a couple weeks now, improving day by day. “We are working hard so far, and I have been impressed with what I have seen in the first couple of weeks.” Said Coach Castro. The young ladies making up the team will have to be patient for now, but when the Spring roles around, the team will hit the court, eager to earn the programs first championship.
