Bengals Soccer Wins Two USCAA Championships
November 12, 2015 • Fort Kent, ME

Asheville, North Carolina—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s and women’s soccer teams both won the USCAA National Championships on Saturday on the campus of Warren Wilson College. This championship was the third consecutive for the women and fifth in the last six. For the men it was their first championship since 2011, after losing in the Championship game the past two seasons.

In the women’s game, the result was never in doubt. The only question would be the margin in which UMFK would come away victorious. Albany College of Pharmacy knocked out the number 2 seed to make it to the Championship and finished their season with a 14-4-1 record. It took just three minutes for Senior Yosselin Burrueco to get the Bengals on the board, as she took a Marie-Laurance Montagne pass. UMFK never looked back from there, winning it 7-0.

UMFK was utterly dominate against USCAA competition this season, going 10-0 and outscoring opponents 74-3. They finish the season with a 20-2-0 record, with the only two losses coming to NCAA Division II schools. They finish the season on a 15 match winning streak, conceding only four goals during that stretch. UMFK outshot Albany 29-4.

Two-Time USCAA Player of the Year Katherine Ferland added a hat trick and an assist to finish up her illustrious career in a Bengal uniform. Ferland finishes her career with 120 goals and 41 assists. Burrueco added a second half goal and chipped in with two assists as well. Kelsi Lanphear and Kayla Richards also added goals for the Bengals. Keeper Michelle Delgadillo finishes her UMFK career without allowing a goal in two straight USCAA tournaments, and finishes with 22 career shutouts. She saved all three shots she faced. Bengal seniors, Ferland, Richards and Carapellucci finish with three USCAA championships and lost in the other championship game.

The men’s game was far more exciting. UMFK knew they were going to be in a battle against a Bryant and Stratton team, who had already defeated the Bengals earlier this season. The teams played to a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation time and another 30 of overtime before the game was decided in penalty kicks. The Bengals won the shootout 2-1, to win their second USCAA championship.

Both teams had a couple of chances throughout the game, but Butch Forbes of UMFK and Harry Watson of Bryant and Stratton, kept their teams in it. In the penalty shootout, UMFK’s Forbes turned out to be the difference as he put a superman like effort together, saving three penalty kicks. USCAA Player of the Year Ben Kluvers missed the first shot or the shootout. Bryant and Stratton then scored and that would be the only shot they would make. UMFK would miss two others until Rodney Witter made the fourth shot for UMFK. With the score tied 1-1, Sophomore Stefan “Sparky” Petricevic stepped up to the mark and drilled his shot to the back of net. Bryant and Stratton missed their fifth and final penalty wide, to seal the victory for UMFK.

Forbes would finish with six saves during the match, while Watson finished with three saves. UMFK finishes their season with a 21-2-0 record. Like the women, they end their season winning 13 consecutive matches conceding just eight goals in the process. UMFK outscored their opponents 126-18 during the season. Seniors Willy Monthe, Alex Charette, Ross Downie, Justin Soontiens and Daniel Blackwood all made the trip and came away with the ultimate prize.
