Men's Soccer Begins Season with Two Wins
August 29, 2016 • Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown, PEI—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s soccer team started their season with two wins against Holland College of Prince Edward Island, 3-0 and 8-1. The Bengals, who are the defending USCAA champions return eight starters and will look to repeat this season.

In Saturday’s game, the Bengals got all they could handle from the hosts, but an early goal from Odean Irons proved to be all UMFK would need. Holland kept the game close but ultimately the skill of the Bengals was too much. Ben Kluvers and Rodney Witter added second half goals for the win. Stefan Petricevic provided two assists and Witter also provided a helper.

USCAA National Tournament MVP, Butch Forbes began his season with a shutout, saving all four shots he faced.

On Sunday, Holland College struck first, but it was all Bengals from there. Ryan Mallard scored for Holland, but six minutes later Irons put one in the back of the net of a pass from Kalusha Kotes. Kotes then scored of a Ben Kluvers pass, and Kluvers then put one in himself to push the lead to 3-1, 17 minutes into the game.

Two goals in the first three minutes ended any Holland hopes. Witter and Kluvers scored those. Carlos Crusat Lopez, Milton Christopher and Tom Coxon all added goals. Butch Forbes picked up his second win, saving two of three shots.
