Bengals Struggle Offensively

Lynn, MA—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team dropped a pair of games in the Boston area this weekend at the Fisher College Fall Classic. On Friday night the Bengals fell to St. Joseph’s (VT) 84-76 and on Saturday afternoon to Fisher College, 65-61.The Bengals shooting was atrocious as they combined to shoot 11-40 from 3 point range in the two games.

On Sunday UMFK put together a stellar defensive performance holding Fisher to just 65 points, for a team who scored 102 points the previous night, but couldn’t get past the shooting woes, going 6-27 from 3. Joe McCloskey led the way for UMFK with 29 points and 13 rebounds, but would get little help otherwise. Four different players scored 6 points each but ultimately Fisher’s balance pulled through. The Falcons had three players in double figures led by Kyle Holmes’ 24 points. UMFK pulled to within 60-59 but wouldn’t get any closer as Fisher converted their free throws down the stretch. The loss brings UMFK’s record to 3-2.

On Friday night, UMFK couldn’t never get going and lost to a team they had just beaten six days previous. UMFK scored just two points in nine minutes as CSJ turned a two point deficit into a 18-2 run to lead by 14 points with 6:47 to go. UMFK went to its full court pressure to get the game back to single digits at 72-66 with 3:30 remaining but that would be as close as they got. The Saints hit eight free throws in the closing moments to secure the win.

McCloskey’s double-double powered UMFK. He had 18 points and 11 rebounds in defeat. Sophomore Jake Rioux hit three 3 pointers and had 11 while Ron Kearse had 10 points and four assists.
