Fort Kent, Maine—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team beat rival University of Maine at Presque Isle, 68-63, on Monday night in the home opener for the Bengals. UMFK held UMPI to 29 points in the second half, to survive a three point barrage, where the visiting Owls hit 11 3’s in total.
UMPI started the game strong and caught the Bengals on their back feet as they got off to a 15-7 start. UMFK’s Travis Harlin scored 21 points in the first half to keep the Bengals close, otherwise the margin might have been much greater. UMPI hit six threes in the first half and trailed by just one, 35-34.
In the second half, the game was back and forth and neither team could pull away, until the Bengals went on an 8-0 run to lead 52-45, that forced an Owl timeout. Three transition baskets were the key to that run. But UMPI responded, when Maurice Harris drove the lane and cut the lead to one, 58-56. UMFK got defensive stops and Travis Harlin hit a foul line jumper to increase the lead to 63-58 and that would be as close as UMPI could get.
Harlin finished with 29 points and Joe McCloskey added 13 and 7 rebounds. Kevin Collins led UMPI with 18, while Kim Collins had 16. Harris finished with 11.
