Fort Kent, Maine—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team dropped a tightly contested matchup between the number one team in USCAA Division II, Berkeley College, who came in with a 37 game win streak, 74-67 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bengals handled the Berkeley full court pressure defense much better than they did early in the season, but ultimately the depth of the Knights was too much for UMFK. Neither team led by more than five points through the first 32 minutes, but then Berkeley caught fire and hit shots on four straight possessions to increase their lead to nine and the Bengals couldn’t recover.
UMFK was led by Joe McCloskey who had 19 points and 12 rebounds. UMFK shot just 38% from the floor and were just 3-15 from three point range. Berkeley’s Ricardo Ayuso hit four, three point shots and finished with 19. Messiah Merritt, Deondre Simmons, and Stephon Jennings all had 14 for Berkeley.
