Kirkland, Washington—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team dropped their season opener to Northwest University of the greater Seattle area, 73-63, on Thursday evening.
UMFK shot 26% in the first half and dig themselves a 15 point halftime deficit, 38-23. The Bengals went scoreless for over eight minutes near the end of the half.
UMFK would battle back in the second half thanks to a huge effort from Thomas Enerva, who scored all 20 of his points in the frame. Enerva picked up two fouls in the first five minutes and was forced to watch the rest of the half from the bench.
The Bengals would cut the lead to six, 61-55, with 4:56 to play after a Jarid Walton three point play. But Northwest University rebounded their own miss and kicked out for a three point shot that ballooned the lead back to nine and UMFK could never recover.
The Bengals gave up 20 second chance points and shot just 3-26 from beyond the arc.
Enerva led the way with 20 points. Senior newcomer Anthony Knight scored 18 in his Bengals debut.
UMFK will travel to Portland, Oregon to take on Multnomah University on Saturday afternoon.
