Game Recap

Delhi, New York—The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s and women’s basketball teams both defeated SUNY Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. The men won on a last second layup by Larry Wickett, 75-74 and the women won 62-54.

In the men’s game, the Bengals built a large first half lead, 17-4, with just six minutes gone in the first half. SUNY Delhi chipped into the lead however, as the first half went on. UMFK led 35-24 with three minutes to go after a Travis Harlin Jr. three point play, but Delhi would end the first half on an 8-2 run to trim the deficit to 37-32 at the break.

UMFK started the second half extremely slow and would trail 51-42 with 13 minutes to go. This was part of a 27-13 run by the Broncos that spanned both halves. The UMFK shooters came alive as Troy Williams would hit four second half threes and Johnathan Caldwell would hit two.

Willams would hit two threes, follow by Benson Arogbo’s first of the game to give the Bengals a 64-58 lead wit just under six to play. With 1:16 to go, another Williams three put UMFK up 73-68 as the shot clock expired. Delhi would connect on a three of their own and make four free throws to set up the dramatic ending.

UMFK called timeout and inbounded the ball to Willams who was immediately fouled as the Broncos had one to give. With no timeouts and the ball under the hoop, Syvanthong inbounded the ball to Wickett Jr., who turned, made a post move and finished the ball of the backboard with one second remaining. A desperation heave by Delhi was unsuccessful.

Troy Williams led the charge with 17, 15 in the second half. Caldwell finished with 14 while Wickett had 11. Bobby Syvanthong had 10 assists and seven rebounds.

The Bengals move to 6-5 on the season and head to Burlington, VT to take on NCAA D1, University of Vermont tomorrow evening.

In the women’s game, the Bengals jumped all over SUNY Delhi from the start and built an early first quarter lead of 22-12. The ball movement and drives by UMFK was too much for Delhi to handle In the end.

UMFK would lead by 10 at the half but an 11-2 run to start the third period by the hosts would cut the lead to Just one for UMFK, 37-36. But that would be as close as they would get, as UMFK answered with their own 12-3 run to end the third quarter. Another strong quarter where the Bengals scored 22 points was enough to close out the game as they would never relinquish the lead in the fourth.

UMFK was led by Savana Jankowski who had 20 and Tate Dolley who scored 17. Both players also grabbed seven rebounds. The team shot 18-22 from the foul line.
