The visiting Fisher College Falcons built a 15 point first half advantage and then held off a furious University of Maine at Fort Kent second half rally in escaping Fort Kent with a 77-74 men’s basketball non conference win on Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Shular led Fisher (1-1) with 17 points (11-11 free throws) and Earnest McNeil recorded a double double with 16 points and 11 boards. Fisher, an NAIA independent from Boston, Mass., went 29-31 from the free throw line while UMFK was just 10-11.
UMFK (1-1) junior guard Jorge Matesanz led four Bengals in double figures with 16 points (4-6 3PT%). Freshmen Mike McClung added 13 points, six boards and four blocks. Kevin Phillips dished out a game-high 10 assists.
Fisher led by 16 (31-15) mid-way through the first half before UMFK trimmed the deficit to seven (39-32) at the break and then made the contest a one possession game down the stretch.
UMFK will play next at the 3-Team Star City Classic in Presque Isle next Saturday and Sunday. UMFK faces UMM on Saturday at 2pm and will then take on host UMPI Saturday at 4pm.
