Game Recap

The University of Maine Fort Kent men’s basketball team got the season off to a rough start with a pair of losses in Massachusetts, losing Friday night to NAIA Powerhouse Embry Riddle 114-61, and Saturday afternoon to NCAA Division III MCLA, 68-55.

Friday’s game was close for the first 10 minutes but two big runs by the Eagles put them up by 21 at the half. The Bengals could never recover as Embry Riddle made 16 3 pointers and shot 60% from the floor. On the flip side UMFK shot a dismal 33%, including 28% from 3. Freshman Jake Rioux led the Bengals with 13 points, including three 3 pointers in his first regular season game. Junior Marquis Glenn added 12 points for UMFK.

Saturday’s game was back and forth throughout with MCLA holding a 32-31 lead at the half. The score was tied at 42 on a McCloskey jumper until the Trailblazers went on 14-2 run over a 6 minute stretch to put MCLA up 12. The lead was too much for the Bengals to overcome as MCLA hit their foul shots and shut down the UMFK offense. The Bengals shot horribly once again finishing at just over 30%. McCloskey led the Bengals with 14 points and the freshman Rioux was solid again hitting 2 threes and finishing with 12 points. Sophomore Nikola Vukosavovic nearly had a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

UMFK will be back in action on Saturday November 22 in a men/women doubleheader at home vs. UMaine Machias. The men will play at 2pm and the women at 4pm.
