Boston, MA—The University of Maine Fort Kent men’s basketball team dropped their final contest of 2014, falling to Fisher College 85-80. The Bengals hit 13 3 pointers but turned the ball over 21 times, including 13 in the second half.

UMFK found themselves in an early hole, falling behind 7-0. After a Bengal timeout, both teams caught fire. UMFK went on a 24-9 run to take a 28-19 lead after a personal 8-0 run from Junior Mauro Vicic.  Fisher then answered with their own 16-3 to take a 4 point lead, 35-31. The game went back and forth for the rest of the half, where both teams shot over 50% from the floor. UMFK was 10-15 from the 3 point line in the first half, in their best shooting half of the season. Vicic had 4 3’s, Freshman Jake Rioux hit 3, and Senior Jorge Matesanz hit 2.

UMFK’s offense slowed down in the second half as Fisher College turned up the defensive pressure and made it very difficult in the ½ court. UMFK once again shot over 50% in the second half, but only got 23 shots away as they turned the ball over 13 times. Fisher limited UMFK to just 3-8 from 3 in the second half. The turning point in the game came at the 8 minute mark with the score tied at 65, Fisher then went on a 15-4 run to give them a lead they would not relinquish, 80-69. Fisher shot 52% for the game and attempted 14 more free throws than the Bengals.

Vicic led UMFK with 20 points, including 6 3 pointers. Joe McCloskey had 19 points and 8 rebound, Rioux had 14 with 4 3 pointers and Qaadir Ali had 12 points and 7 assists.

The Bengals will take a 14 day Holiday break and return to action in Saint John, New Brunswick on January 3 & 4 at the second annual Can-Am Classic.
