Game Recap

Saint John, New Brunswick—The University of Maine Fort Kent women’s and men’s basketball teams got their new year’s off to a winning start by beating Crandall University Saturday afternoon at the 2nd annual Can-Am Classic.

The women started the day off with a 61-53 win and the men backed it up with an 84-75 victory. Both teams are playing this weekend’s tournament with only seven healthy players each. Both games were similar as the women and men got off to fast starts with the women up by 8 at the half and the men up 14.

In the women’s game, UMFK led for the majority of the game until Crandall’s Madison McHartten hit a 3 to give the Chargers their first lead of the game at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Bengals opened the 4th quarter with a look inside to Senior Ericka Saucier to give the Bengals the lead back and they would not relinquish it from there. UFMK was led by Saucier’s 22 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Danielle Carrillo had a great shooting day, going 7-10, for 16 points. Junior Sam Carapellucci also had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Junior Kayla Richards had a solid all-around game with 7 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. UMFK held Crandall to just 27.4% shooting on the afternoon. They also outrebounded the Chargers by a 55-36 margin.

In the men’s game, the Bengals got off to a hot shooting start, making 7-10 from 3 in the first half and 52% overall and were able to get their transition game going against the bigger Crandall team. Crandall tried to combat against the smaller Bengal lineup, but foul trouble eventually caught up with them. The Bengals shot 32 free throws compared to just 11 from Crandall.

UMFK saw their entire lead evaporate late in the 3rd quarter as Crandall came roaring back to tie it at 62, but a Mauro Vicic 3 pointer from the wing ended the run and got the Bengals back on track. UMFK had to play much of the game without point guard Qaadir Ali who battled foul trouble all afternoon, but an All-American like performance by Junior Marquis Glenn took care of that. Glenn flirted with a triple double and ended the night with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Vicic led the Bengals with 25 points including 5 of 8 from three point land. Big Man Joe McCloskey was big in the second half for UMFK with 12 of his 20 points in the second. McCloskey also had 11 rebounds and took 5 charges for the Bengals. Ali had 11 points and 4 assists in limited action while Jake Rioux chipped in with 8 points and 2 steals.

Both teams will play against host UNB-Saint John tomorrow afternoon.
