Game Recap

Fort Kent, Maine—The University of Maine at Fort Kent Women’s and Men’s soccer teams both kicked off their home soccer seasons with victories against Crandall University of Moncton. The women won the first game of the afternoon 6-0, thanks to hat tricks from Sophomores Kendra Freund and Catherine Bruno. The men completed the sweep for the Bengals with a 7-0 victory.

In the women’s game the Bengals dominated play for the entire 90 minutes. They outshot the Chargers 43-0, 27 coming on target, with Crandall keeper Michaela LeMoine making 16 saves to keep the game relatively close. Kendra Freund started the scoring in the 3rd minute with a header after Yosselin Burrueco tapped a short corner to Brook Wooldridge who sent the ball into the far post and found Freund’s head. Seven minutes later she scored again on a lucky ball after Sam Carapellucci crossed a ball in but the keeper bobbled it and Freund was there to put the ball away.

In the second half Catherine Bruno scored a hat trick within twelve minutes taking two passes from Marie-Laurence Montagne, the second on a beautiful threw-ball delivery that Bruno one touched to the back of the net. Freund completed her hat trick on a delivery after Yosselin Burrueco made a series of nifty moves to get past three defenders.

UMFK keeper Michelle Delgadillo picked up the win in goal. Kara Leffle replaced her at halftime and neither was forced to make a save. UMFK moves to 2-0 on the season.

In the men’s game, the Bengals were the superior team on the afternoon outshooting their opponent 40-1. Odean Irons opened the scoring in the 6th minute after a mistimed shot from Ross Downie ended up on the left side where Irons was there to drill it home. Just one minute later Downie crossed the ball to Ben Kluvers who sent a beautiful pass forward and Irons again was on the receiving end. In the 18th minute Ross Downie was streaking down the middle of the box and 2014 USCAA National Player of the Year Kluvers delivered an extremely unselfish pass that Downie drilled to the upper right corner of the goal.

Willy Monthe then got into the scoring column with a goal in each half. Each goal had its fair share of flare with the first coming as he dribbled 30 yards and made one move past the goalie for his first and then in the second half Sparky Petricevic delivered a ball from midfield which brought the goalie out and Monthe chipped the shot over Crandall keeper Daniel Blanchet’s head. Milton Christopher had a breakaway goal and Daniel Blackwood fired a bullet past the keeper to finish the scoring.

Bengal goalies Butch Forbes picked up the win and Alex Charette was forced to make the only save of the match. The Bengals move to 4-0 and will play home Friday September 4th against Maine Maritime at 5pm.
