Game Recap

Fort Kent, Maine—The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s and men’s soccer teams came away victorious on homecoming weekend, beating University of Maine at Machias. The women won 5-0 and the men won 3-1.

In the women’s game, Sherifatu Sumaila scored a hat trick and had an assist, while Briana Mills chipped in with two assists. The Bengals defense shutout an opponent for the fifth consecutive match. Kelsi Lanphear began the game scoring off a one timer from 30 yards out that floated over the goalies head. 16 minutes later Sumaila scored her first of the contest taking a Mills through ball and poking it to the left hand side of goal. Marie-Laurence Montagne scored one minute later and Sumaila scored her second with four minutes to go in the half.

Sumaila completed her hat trick with 16 minutes left in the game off a pass from Kendra Fruend. Valentina Green and Katie Condon combined in goal for the Bengals to earn the victory.

In the men’s game, 26 fouls were whistled in a rough, physical game. The Bengals dominated play, but Machias never quit. UMFK scored two goals in the first 11 minutes and that would prove to be enough. The first, Ryan Merckel, in his first career start for the Bengals, received a chip pass inside the box that he then chipped over to Odean Irons who put the ball away. Three minutes later, Rodney Witter came flying in to head a Stuart Conway corner kick to the back of the net.

Machias would get a ball past the normally, stingy Bengal defense and Lorenzo Segura was able to rebound his initial shot, which hit off the post and put it home. Ben Kluvers added a late goal in the second half for UMFK.

Butch Forbes made two saves for the win.
