Game Recap

September 10, 2014

Castine, Maine—Ben Kluvers and Willie Monthe both scored goals, for the fourth time in as many games, to help seal the deal for the Bengals, who beat Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday, 3-0.

Jamie Reid opened the scoring in the 12th minute for UMFK when he took the pass from midfielder Ross Downie just inside the penalty area and chipped the ball over MMA keeper Marshall Spear’s head. Spear had a fine evening in goal for the Mariners as UMFK dominated play again, outshooting Maine Maritime 24-9, holding a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Kluvers, who has now scored in eight consecutive games, dating back to last season, was able to continue his streak as he scored a first half goal for the Bengals in the 27th minute.  Kennard Brown gave a beautiful through ball from about 20 yards out and Kluvers masterfully placed it past the outstretched keeper’s hands.

Also scoring in his fourth consecutive game this season, Willie Monthe closed the scoring for UMFK in the 81st minute as the Bengals went on the counter attack when Maine Maritime headed a ball just wide of the net. Monthe took the pass up field and snuck it the lower right hand corner past the goalie.

The Bengals keepers faced as much action as they had seen thus far combined, but again were rock solid, combining for their third shutout in four matches. Akheim Forbes stopped both shots he faced and Jamie Cleland turned away the only attempt he saw. They saw 9 shots in total, but just three on goal.

UMFK will return to action with a home game, Saturday September 13th at 1:00 pm. Berkeley of New Jersey will make the journey up to face the Bengals who are unbeaten at 40-0, during the past eight seasons.
