Game Recap

September 13, 2014

Fort Kent, Maine—The UMFK men’s soccer team (5-0-0) returned home for the first time in two weeks and looked as sharp as ever, easing past Berkeley of New Jersey (2-5-0) Saturday afternoon, 6-1. The Bengals continue an impressive streak of 50 consecutive unbeaten home matches that now spans over eight seasons, dating back to 2006. This game was never in doubt as one of the USCAA’s most electrifying scoring duos continued their impressive feat of scoring in each game this season. Sophomore Ben Kluvers scored a goal in each half and Senior Willie Monthe came off the bench for the third time this season and contributed immediately.

Monthe opened the scoring after a flurry of shots for the Bengals in the 33rd minute. Ross Downie crossed a low ball, which Monthe controlled, spun around a defender, duped the goalie with a quick touch and placed it in the back of the net. It was then Kluvers time as UMFK took advantage of an obstruction call inside the penalty area. Jamie Reid touched the ball and Kluvers struck the ball in the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Reid then added a goal of his own, on a broken play from a corner kick. The ball was deflected away and Jamie Reid one timed in past Berkeley keeper Jonathan Pena-Ortiz.

The UMFK defense, which doesn’t get enough credit for its success, was once again rock-solid. They limited Berkeley to just one shot on goal in the first half which was saved by freshman goalie Ahkeim Forbes. Forbes got the victory and moves to 2-0-0 on the young season.

Kennard Brown sandwiched two goals around another Kluvers score that ended the scoring day for the Bengals. Brown’s goals came in the 56th and 85th minutes. Brown’s first goal came off a great cross from newcomer Stefan Petricevic, after he took a through ball from Kyle Robin and angled inside the defense. Kluvers then trickled the ball past Pena-Ortiz in the 73rd minute and Brown’s second goal made it 6 for UMFK.

Berkeley forward Nuno Santos was able to get the Knights on the board as he took a corner kick in the 53rd minute and blasted in past Sophomore Jamie Cleland. Cleland saw more action in the 2nd half as he was forced to make a season high four saves on 5 shots on goal. Forbes stopped the only shot he faced. Berkeley keeper Pena-Ortiz made six saves on 12 shots on goal. The Bengals outshot Berkeley 27-9 in total.

UMFK will head back on the road as they take the trip to Vermont for three matches in three days against College of St. Joseph, Vermont Tech, and Southern Vermont College on September 17, 18 and 19, respectively.
