Game Recap

Recently ranked as the #4 team in USCAA Division I Women’s Basketball, the University of Maine Fort Kent women struggled on the road this past weekend. On Saturday, UMFK fell to Alfred State, 60-56. Sunday the women rebounded for a victory at SUNY Canton 76-68 and Monday they fell to UMaine Farmington, 72-69.

On Saturday, the Bengals shot a season low 27.7% from the floor which ultimately they could not overcome. They were able to hold Alfred State to just 60 points but could not put the ball in the basket down the stretch. All-American Candidate Ericka Saucier was held to just 1-12 shooting, but did have eight foul shots to finish with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but battled first half foul trouble and could never get going. Sam Carapellucci was a monster inside for UMFK and kept the Bengals in the game the whole way with 19 points and a career high 21 rebounds. UMFK would get the lead down to 3 (52-49) on a Danielle Carrillo layup but Alfred State answered with a quick 5-0 run to put the game out of reach. Carrillo finished with 11 points.

On Sunday the Bengals got off to a better start and shot the ball better than they did Saturday. Ericka Saucier got back on track to collect game highs in both points and rebounds with 26 and 13. Danielle Carrillo hit five 3 pointers to finish with 19 points, Kayla Richards had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Sam Carapellucci finished with 6 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. The Bengals trailed by as many as 14 in the first half as once again the ball couldn’t find the bottom of the net, shooting 23% for the half, whereas SUNY Canton shot 52%. In the second half the transition game came alive for UMFK as they shot 54% and outrebounded the Roo’s 28-18. Saucier had a double-double in the second half alone with 17 points and 10 rebounds. UMFK finally took the lead for good with a personal 10-0 run from Saucier to take the lead, 55-50 and never looked back, maintaining a 7 or 8 point lead for the rest of the half.

On Monday, in the last of a back to back to back, neither team could hold much of a lead, with UMaine Farmington holding the largest lead of the half at 5, but UMFK battled back to trail by 3 at the half. In the second half a 21-7 run to start the half put the Beavers up by 17 (53-36). UMFK would their own 19-5 run to tie the game at 64 with just 2:01 remaining on a Danielle Carrillo jumper. UMF would answer with a three point play from Elizabeth Ferry. The home team would make 7 of 8 free throws to finish the game off. UMFK was once again led by the dynamic inside duo of Saucier and Carapellucci. Saucier finished with game highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds and Carapellucci had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Alexis Warne finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds.
