Game Recap

Ashland, Ohio--The University of Maine at Fort Kent women's soccer team dropped two of three matches in what would be arguably the toughest three-game stretch in history. The Bengals wanted to measure themselves early in the season and scheduled three matches against NCAA Division II schools, Walsh University, Malone University and Ashland University. UMFK dropped a 3-1 match to Walsh, beat Malone 4-1 and lost to Ashland on Sunday 2-1.

In the Walsh match, the Bengals allowed two goals in the first four minutes and never recovered. UMFK actually outshot Walsh 12-10, and had 8 shots in the second half but the deficit was too much. Freshman Veronica De La Cruz scored the Bengals goal in the 32nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the Malone match, it was the Freshman De La Cruz again. She scored a second half hat trick all with 12 minutes of each other to power the Bengals to the win. Her first goal proved to be the game winner as she took a pass from Yosselin Burrueco and slid it past Malone keeper Leah Rauscher's outstretched arms. Burrueco started off the scoring in the 2nd minute for UMFK. Catherine Bruno assisted on De La Cruz's third goal. Michelle Delgadillo picked up the win for UMFK.

Sunday in the Ashland match, early goals in halves proved to be the difference. UMFK conceeded a goal just 1:50 in the contest and again 2:42 into the second half. Brianna Mills provided a goal off a free kick in the 88th minute but it wasn't enough.

UMFK returns home to host Fisher College in their homecoming match on Sunday September 20th at 12:00pm.
