Fort Kent, Maine--The University of Maine at Fort Kent soccer teams got their home campaigns off to winning starts, with both teams defeating University of Maine at Machias. The women won 10-1 and the men won 4-0. Both teams are defending United States College Athletic Association (USCAA) national champions.
In the girls game, the Bengal women dominated from start to finish and continued their great offensive start to the season. Keeper-turned-midlfielder, Valentina Green scored the first Bengal goal. Green, who has started every game in goal for the Bengals played a left wing today in hopes of trying to sure the midfield. Freshman sensation Tolu Oyeniyi scored the second UMFK goal off a bicycle kick goal after taking a feed from USCAA Player of the Year, Sheriatu Sumaila. Sumaila scored two first half goals of her own and had two assists as she looked to set her teammates up all afternoon long.
Machias had their moment of glory off a defensive blunder that led to an early tap in from forward Sarah Klein with 18 minutes remaining in the first half.
UMFK received goals two goals each from Sumaila, Green and Sabrina Brooks. Ronnique Edwards, Kendra Freund, Mili Alvarez also scored goals for the Bengals.
Alice Van Kovn picked up the win for UMFK.
In the men's game, a deliberate hand ball by Machias in the Fort Kent penalty area led to a Mark Parchment penalty kick just eight minutes into the contest. The Bengals continued to dominate the offensive third of the field, peppering shots from all over throughout the contest. Rodney Witter also scored a first half goal for UMFK.
The Bengals then added second half goals from Shaun Genus and Comar Pascoe.
Bengal keeper Butch Forbes saved the only shot he faced, early in the first half.
