Fort Kent, Maine—The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s soccer team continued their undefeated home start by defeating USCAA foe, SUNY Canton, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon. This contest was the most contested home match for the Bengals in 2017 as the visiting Roos countered and matched the intensity from UMFK and gave the home team all they wanted for 90 minutes.
Freshman Sabrina Brooks scored after SUNY Canton keeper Allison Wakefield made a save but deflected the ball right to Brooks who buried it in the back of the net.
Last season’s USCAA Player of the Year Sherifa Sumaila then scored a goal, in the 23rd minute, as she just floated a ball over the keeper in the back right corner of the net. Sabrina Brooks and Tolu Oyeniyi had the assists on the goal. Sumaila also added two assists, to increase her season totals of 19 goals and a USCAA high, 17 assists.
Oyeniyi, the freshman phenom, added a goal in each half to solidify the victory for the Bengals.
Canton scored a very nice goal in the first half as Abbey D’Agostino sent a ball up field right to the foot of Madison Rowe who scored over the top of keeper Alice Van Kovn. Bailey Grace scored off a header with nine minutes to go in the game.
Van Kovn made four saves on eight shots. Wakefield made a number of key saves to keep the Roos in the match.
