Castine, ME—The UMFK women’s volleyball team completed their long weekend road trip by beating Maine Maritime Academy in both matches Tuesday night, 3-1 and a come from behind 3-2 thriller.

In the first match, the Bengals got off to a great start jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. They would be able to maintain the lead without much pressure and take the first set 25-18. The Bengals were very clean throughout the match committing just 7 errors in four complete sets, including just one error in each of the final two sets. The second set was tight throughout with UMFK battling back to 24-23 after trailing 24-19, only to have the Mariners win it 25-23. Anna Peabody had 4 kills in the second set. The third and fourth sets were all Bengals, winning them 25-17 and 25-21. Hope Grace was perfect in the first match with 9 kills and no errors. Anna Peabody led the charge with 16 kills and made just two errors. Danielle Carrillo had 13 kills and just four errors. Tiara Nolen had a game high 7 service aces. Jessekah McCorkle had 47 assists and a season high 20 digs. The Bengals had 94 digs on the match.

The second match was a thriller. With both teams feeling the effects on the doubleheader, the Bengals got off to the quick start again and were able to take the first set 25-20. Maine Maritime caught some momentum however and took the next two sets 26-24 and 25-20. UMFK recovered in the fourth set as Carrillo, Peabody and Grace combined for 10 kills and just 2 errors in the set and took advantage of 3 service aces from LaTisha Carballo at the end of the set as the Bengals won it 25-17. Playing a 5th set for the second consecutive day the Bengals got off to a slow start and trailed early 2-0. The set went back and forth the entire time, but the Bengals were a little bit stronger at the end, out-killing MMA 10-8 and ultimately winning the deciding set 15-13. Jessany Munoz had a great serving day as well combining for 8 aces in the two matches and 37 digs.

The Bengals were very clean once again combining for just 21 errors in 180 attack attempts for the match. UMFK had to withstand an excellent performance from Maine Maritime sophomore Gillian O’Neal as she combined for 55 kills in the two matches between the teams.

The Bengals will close their regular season against UMPI on senior night, this Thursday October 17th at 5 and 7pm in Fort Kent. They will then await word from the USCAA as to whether or not they have been chosen for a spot in the USCAA National tournament. The Bengals continue to eclipse records and have now won 19 matches on the season.
