Uniontown, Pennsylvania—The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s basketball team made history on Wednesday afternoon, posting the program’s first ever USCAA National Tournament victory with a win over #4 seed Silver Lake College, 83-60.
The Bengals came out firing as they shot 60% in the first half while holding their opponents to just 35%. The first quarter was back and forth with Silver Lake holding a slight, 13-9 lead with 4:55 to go. It was then a 23-8 run by the Bengals over the next 9:34 that put them firmly in the lead. USCAA 1st team All-American Ericka Saucier and 2nd team All-American Sam Carapellucci each had 17 points in the half. Another 1st team All-American, Romanalyn Inocencio had eight points, nine assists and three steals as the Bengals led 46-28 at the half.
The Bengals would continue to pour it on in the second half with Saucier and Carapellucci leading the way once again. UMFK shot 50% from the floor for the game and outrebounded Silver Lake 49-38. Carapellucci finished with a career high, 33 points and 11 rebounds, good for her 10th double-double of the season. Saucier had a monster game with 27 points and 19 rebounds. Inocencio set a new USCAA Championships record with 15 assists to accompany her 13 points and six steals.
Silver Lake was led by Danielle Buck who had 11 points and 5 rebounds, but was the other double figure scorer all night.
UMFK will play their semi-final on Friday morning at 11:00am against top seed and perennial power, Concordia College of Alabama.
