Freshmen Samantha Carapellucci (Fort Kent, Maine) scored 15 points to lead the U-Maine-Fort Kent women’s basketball team to a 72-50 win against the Fighting Saints of the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) in the consolation game of the 2012 TDS Ed Hockenbury Classic hosted by Norwich University. UMFK (5-3) travels to play at USCAA #1 Daemen on Sunday at 2pm.
Carapellucci, who scored a career high in the second straight game of her young career, connected for 6-13 shots from the floor and knocked down 3-5 from the free-throw line in being named an Ed Hockenbury All-Tournament selection alongside St. Joseph’s Brittany Garrow (Rutland, Vt.).
UMFK took an early lead and never trailed, using 46.4 percent shooting in the first half to build a 41-25 advantage at half.
In addition to Carapellucci, UMFK got double-digit scoring performances by Ericka Christenson (So., Warren, Maine), Brooke Harris (Jr., Lee, Maine), and Rachel Grew (Fr., Mars Hill, Maine), who chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Kelly Festa (Poultney, Vt.) led CSJ-VT (3-5) with a double-double, totaling a game-high 21 points and adding 15 rebounds.
