Virginia-University-Lynchburg women’s basketball survived a furious U-Maine-Fort Kent second half rally to escape with a 70-69 win Sunday in the finale of the VUL Dragons Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia. The loss drops UMFK to a .500 at 6-6 as they head into semester break. The Lady Bengals will return to action January 6 when they travel to the College of Saint Joseph in Rutland, Vermont.
On Sunday UMFK erased a 12-point deficit with just under 10minutes remaining by making some key defensive stops and getting to the foul line where they made 31-45 (68%). Sophomore forward Ericka Christensen (Warren, Maine) went 14-17 from the line on her way to a team-high 30 points and added 12 boards for UMFK. Ebony Ellis scored a game-high 32 to lead VUL.
The Lady Bengals took the lead with just over a minute left and had possession with 30seconds left down one but couldn’t convert. Freshmen Samantha Carrapulluci (Fort kent) added 14 points and eight boards for UMFK who also lost to VUL Saturday 74-64.
