The University of Maine Fort Kent opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 win over Sheridan College (Ontario, Canada) Friday afternoon in Amherst, New York.
Senior midfielder Theresa Biggs (Cape Town, South Africa) scored the eventual game winner with 34:31 left in the first half on an assist from freshmen forward Kayla Richards (Presque Isle, Maine) by tapping her shot over Sheridan Keeper Lianne Schlicter for the score.
UMFK (1-0) freshmen keeper Kimika Forbes (Trinidad & Tobago) recorded six of her nine saves in the second half to earn the shutout win for the Lady Bengals in her first career collegiate start. The teams were even in shots at fourteen while Sheridan held 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Sheridan (0-1) keeper Schlicter (4 saves) split time in goal with Alyssa Texeira (1 save) combining to make five saves.
