End of Bengals Season, Hall of Famers Wanted
March 24, 2020 • Fort Kent, ME

Fort Kent, ME—The UMFK Bengals season was robbed from them in an instant, like a thief in the night. The Men’s basketball team was boarding their team bus in Uniontown, Pennsylvania getting ready to head to the venue for their game, when they received the call: tournament cancelled. The Track and Field team, coming off one of their best performances in the young history of the program, was not allowed to compete in the outdoor portion of their season. Fortunately, the Women’s Basketball team was able get their national tournament game in, just in the nick of time. It was a game the Bengals lost down the stretch, it could have went either way. The COVID-19 Corona Virus pandemic has taken a lot from student athletes all over the world, and the Bengal student athletes are no different.

The Bengal athletic department is taking this time off as a time to reflect, grow and get ready for the future. Despite the season being cut short, there was much to celebrate including Academic All-Americans, All-Americans, a USCAA Student-Athlete of the Year, two National Runner-Up finishes and a National Championship. The basketball and track and field programs are looking at this Corona Virus situation as a minor setback, but will be ready for a major comeback.

In other athletics news, UMFK is seeking nominations for the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. The UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame was established to recognize the men and women who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics by their performance on UMFK athletic teams, through their achievements after graduation from the University, or by their efforts on behalf of UMFK athletics. Nominations will be accepted in the following categories: athlete, team, coach/administrator, and special inductee. Any alumni or friend of UMFK may submit a nomination for consideration by an 11-member selection committee, which consists of students, athletes, coaches, faculty, administrators and alumni of the University.  Nominees must receive at least 70 percent of the vote of the selection committee to be eligible for induction into the UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame.  A maximum of three nominees will be inducted on an annual basis.
