Basketball teams up with Forest Hill

University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s and women’s basketball players participated in a game of basketball at Northern Maine Medical Center’s Forest Hill Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center on Monday April 9.
In a joint effort between UMFK Head Coaches, Eric Werntgen and Bradley Holabird, and Forest Hill Activities Director, Linda Bergeron, the players split up and played a game of modified basketball on a hoop roughly four feet high to accommodate the residents, all of whom are confined to wheelchairs.
UMFK team members who participated this year were Zsakiyah Brown (Brooklyn, New York), Emmaly Jurson (Hogdon, Maine) and Quintina Young (Portland, Maine) along with Head Coach Bradley Holabird. Representing the Bengal men’s team were Yoshives Belizaire (Miramar, Florida) Glenn Gaitor (Freeport, Bahamas), Jaxon Walton (Dallas, Texas) and Head Coach Eric Werntgen.
The white team won in overtime over the green team on a game winner by one of the Forest Hill residents.
The event marked the fifth time in the past six years NMMC and UMFK have held the event. The event was cancelled in April of 2008 during the historic Fort Kent flood. The activity is part of the UMFK Athletics Bengal Character Initiative Program in which UMFK student-athletes and teams give back to their local community in a variety of different projects.
