Tom Bird has been named the next University of Maine at Fort Kent Men’s Basketball Coach in an announcement by Athletic Director, Bill Ashby. Bird replaces Eric Werntgen who has accepted a position with The Sport Source®, a Richardson, Texas based company which provides college planning for high school students in grades 9-12.

Bird comes to Maine-Fort Kent following a year as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations at (NCAA D-I) North Dakota State University.

Prior to NDSU, Bird served as the assistant video coordinator for (NCAA D-I), University of Florida women's basketball.

Bird, a native of Lee, Maine, brings Maine-ties to his new position at UMFK. Before taking the job at the University of Florida, Bird was the assistant women's basketball coach at Thomas College (NCAA D-3) in Waterville, Maine. He graduated from Thomas College with a bachelor's degree in Sport Management.

Bird’s coaching career began in his native Lee, Maine with stints as men's post graduate basketball assistant coach at Lee Academy Prep as well as varsity boys’ basketball assistant at Lee Academy where he graduated high school from as the third all-time leading scorer in program history.

Bird will also serve UMFK as Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director.
