York, Pennsylvania--The University of Maine at Fort Kent men's basketball team turned in another stellar defensive effort, holding Penn State York to 39% from the field, en route to a 70-63 victory. This was UMFK's first game of the new semester.
PSU York got out to an early 18-10 lead, eight minutes into the game. Their 3-2 zone stifled the Bengal offense and limited second chance opportunities. UMFK then turned up the defensive pressure and held the Lions to just 12 points over the final 12:43 of the half. UMFK was able to get out and run, and John Caldwell came in and hit two three point shots. UMFK led 36-30 at the half.
In the second half, the game was within a possession, five minutes in until UMFK went on a decisive 16-2 run over the next eight minutes, to lead 61-46 with 7:48 remaining. PSU York would quit however and went on their own 11-0 run, but UMFK was able to leak out for a couple of layups to close the game.
Travis Harlin had a season high 20 to go with nine rebounds. Caldwell hit four threes for 12 points, while Troy Williams and Benson Arogbo added 12 and 10. Bobby Syvanthong continued his four game streak of double-figure rebounds with 10. He also had six points and seven assists.
UMFK held York's leading scorer and rebounder, Richard Grant to 15 points and three rebounds. He had been averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds.
