Waterville, Maine—The University of Maine Fort Kent Men’s soccer team continued their winning ways by defeating Thomas College, 3-0 on Tuesday night. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first 45 minute frame but the offense came alive to score three second half goals. The only real scoring chance in the first half was created by Jamie Reid’s free kick from about 24 yards away that banged off the goal post.
Newcomer Rodney Witter opened the scoring in the second half after he took another Jamie Reid free kick was lofted to the far post off his head and to the back of the net. It was then Sophomore Kalusha Kotes who sent a beautiful cross to the edge of the 18 yard line and Senior Ross Downie was there to head it into the lower right corner of the goal which Thomas goalie Joakim Sternas had no chance to save. Senior Willie Monthe closed the scoring in the 89th minute on a beautiful turn with the ball past the defender and tapped the ball to the near post.
Sternas saved two shots and UMFK goalie Butch Forbes made six saves for the win. UMFK moves to 3-0 on the season and Thomas drops to 0-1. The Bengals play at home on Thursday against Crandall at 4:00pm and at home vs. Maine Maritime Academy, Friday at 4:00pm.
