Larry Murphy
Aroostook County native Larry Murphy has coached sports on the elementary, secondary and collegiate levels in northern Maine since the 1970s. He has touched the lives of many students and many athletes over the past four decades.
Born and raised in Caribou, Maine, Larry Murphy graduated from Caribou High School and went on to attend UMFK where he attained the deans list each year "after marriage," a 3.33 grade point average, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science. He later earned a Master's degree in Education Administration from the University of Maine.
While attending UMFK, Larry played four years on the men's soccer team, captaining the squad his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was a three-time most valuable player; North East College Conference all-conference first team honoree his junior and senior years; and was named to the NAIA District 5 All-New England Soccer Team during his sophomore campaign.
Coach Murphy guided the UMFK men's soccer team from 1975 to 1991, and again in 2001, 2002, and 2005. He also coached the Bengal men's basketball squad from 1985 to 1991 and the women's volleyball team in 1985 and 1986. He was Coordinator of Athletics from 1975 to 1992.
Larry was honored as the NAIA District 5 basketball "Coach of the Year" in 1987; the Sunrise Conference Soccer "Coach of the Year" in 2002 and 2005; and was the Maine Basketball Writers and Coaches "Coach of the Year in 1987. He also has coached soccer and basketball on the high school level, where he has earned several honors and recognition, as well.
In his spare time, "Murph" is the owner of more than 20 sled dogs. He is a regular competitor in the Can-Am Crown International Sled dog races, where he has completed three, 60-mile races and two, 250-mile races. Larry Murphy's approach, work ethic, and persona have made his students not only better athletes, but better citizens, as well.
