Lowell Osgood

Year of Induction: 2008

Ozzie Osgood was a coach and a builder.  Under his leadership, the UMFK athletic department was formed and the University became a true collegiate competitor in both soccer and basketball.

"Ozzie" Osgood was a native of Carroll Plantation, Maine and graduated high school from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Physical Education, and later earned a Master of Education degree, both at the University of Maine.  He also attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, while serving his nation in the U.S. Air Force as a radio/gunner.

Prior to coming to Fort Kent, Osgood was a baseball, football, and basketball coach at high schools in Willimantic, Connecticut and Greenville, Mars Hill, and Old Town, Maine.  He played semi-pro baseball for eight years for the Greenville Lakers and the Presque Isle Indians in the Maine-New Brunswick and Tri-County leagues.  He managed the Indians for two summers.

Lowell Osgood came to UMFK in the fall of 1962 and served as physical education teacher, soccer and basketball coach and athletic director over the next 15 years.  He also served stints as director of intramurals, recruitment, and as a student council advisor. During his tenure as coach at UMFK, his basketball teams never had a losing season.  His 1968-69 squad was highest-scoring college team that season with 2,101 point scored in 21 games; better than a 100 point scoring average.  UMFK was Northeast College Conference champs that year, as well.

Over his UMFK basketball coaching career, Osgood's teams record was 217-105 (.674), with one conference title, twice as runners-up, and never finishing lower than fourth in the eight-team field.  His team won the UMFK Invitational eight times in 11 years.

Lowell "Ozzie" Osgood passed away in May 2002.  Although he no longer is with us, his presence is felt every time a UMFK athlete steps onto the field or the court of play.
