Bob Marquis

Robert Marquis ('77) played on the 1973-74 and 1974-75 UMFK men's basketball teams coached by Lowell “Ozzie” Osgood (HOF '08).  Bob also was active as a member of the student council, Omega Sigma Beta fraternity, and the Winter Carnival committee. But he is perhaps best known for his 30-year run as a teacher, coach, official and athletic administrator at schools in East Millinocket, Maine, the last 10 at Schenck High School.   Bob retired from teaching and coaching in June 2007, but he leaves behind an impressive record. Over the years he coached girls soccer on the club sport level, girls junior high and high school-level basketball, both varsity and junior varsity; and men's baseball.  During the 1980s, his girl's varsity basketball teams at Schenck High School went to the state tournament five times in a row, reaching the eastern Maine final in 1986. Most of Bob's teams posted winning records.  Some of the records were rather impressive.  But Bob coached for something more than “Ws,” often it was to teach the fundamentals of the game, or develop an interest in a sport.  It was about the love of the game; whatever the game.  Off the court Bob was active, as well.  He coached basketball in the local recreation league for eight years; little pro football for five; Little League for four years; tee ball in the morning, Babe Ruth baseball in the afternoon, and a traveling team in the evening for a baseball summer recreation program.  Bob also found time to be a parish council member of eight years; an Elks Lodge member; refereed basketball tournaments; and attain third-degree Knights of Columbus membership. Bob and his wife, Sarah, reside in Millinocket.  They have two children: a daughter, Regan, and a son, Dallas.
