Eric Werntgen

Eric Werntgen took on many roles in his 16-year career at UMFK. He was both an administrator serving as Assistant Athletic Director, Sports Information Director, and Coach, guiding, at one point or another in his career, the Women’s Soccer, Women’s Basketball, and later the Men’s basketball teams. The Vermont native saw the most success during his 11 years as the Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball team. Werntgen compiled a 150-155 record (.491 win percentage). His teams appeared in two National Tournaments (NAIA 2010, USCAA 2012), which included the first NAIA Division II appearance in program history in 2010. Coach Werntgen's Bengals made nine-straight trips to post-season play (2004-2012); eight straight conference final four appearances (2004-2011), and five straight trips to conference championship games (2007-2011).

Coach Werntgen played a major role in recruiting student-athletes to UMFK from not just Northern Maine but all over the world. He also had a unique ability to cultivate talent that many other programs might have overlooked for a variety of reasons.

After stepping down and transitioning to an Athletic Director position with Community High School in Fort Kent, Werntgen played a huge role in the community, providing athletic opportunities for kids of all ages. His upbeat personality and ability to put a smile on everyone’s face made him one of the most well-liked and admired members of the small town. Werntgen tragically passed away in 2021, but his legacy will live on forever in Fort Kent.
