Jarryd Phillips, Hall of Fame Class of 2020
Although there have been many great athletes to play for the University of Maine at Fort Kent over the years, few have enjoyed success in the professional ranks once their careers in Fort Kent come to a close. Jarryd Phillips is one of those athletes.
The native of Johannesburg, South Africa, came to Fort Kent, Maine, in 2008 and immediately saw success under Head Men’s Soccer Coach Bill Ashby. Phillips was a member of the legendary 2008 Men’s Soccer team that made it all the way to the NAIA Elite Eight. That team was inducted into the UMFK Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. It was in 2010 that Phillips truly began to shine as the Men’s Soccer team won the USCAA National Championship, the first in the program’s history. Phillips followed up a strong 2010 by being named team captain in 2011 and 2012 and being nominated as a USCAA All-American in both of those seasons.
Following his playing days at UMFK, Phillips played for the Thunder Bay Chill in the United Soccer League, formerly the Premier Development League. Phillips made UMFK incredibly proud as he was able to follow his dreams of playing pro soccer.
After his playing days were over, Phillips stayed in the game as a strength and conditioning coach. Phillips has served as a performance coach for the Seattle Sounders of the MLS and the Head of Performance for the Minnesota United of the MLS. Phillips also holds a number of soccer coaching licenses as well as strength and conditioning certificates. Phillips is one of the most qualified soccer coaching and soccer training individuals in the country.
Phillips graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Business Management from UMFK and proceeded to earn a Master’s in Exercise Science from the University of Mary. Phillips currently lives in Massachusetts and has one child, Finn, with his wife Jennifer.
