Nance and McCulloch Take Home Major Awards, Many Bengals headed home with hardware.
The University of Maine at Fort Kent is very proud to announce that they had a plethora of young men and women represent the university in the best way at the USCAA National Championship Tournament Fall Banquet, winning awards based on their performance in their respective sports, but more importantly, their performance in the classroom.
The Women’s Volleyball team had both Heather Harness and Rachel Nance earn 2nd Team All-American Status with Senior captain Luse Lumas earning a 1st team nod. Lumas, Nance, and Erika Gutierrez were also named to the National All-Academic team for their strong showing in the classroom. Lumas and Nance were named to the All-Tournament team for their strong play throughout the weekend.
Rachel Nance earned perhaps the most gratifying award of the season, she was named the 2019 USCAA Volleyball Division 1 Student Athlete of the Year. Nance, a Senior Captain for the Bengal Volleyball team, is one of the best players in the country as she ranks in the top five in Kills Per Set with 2.96 kills and is number two in blocks per set with .79 blocks. The native of Honolulu, Hawaii, has a 3.7 GPA in the rigorous nursing program and spends her evenings working at a local nursing home providing care for the elderly people of Fort Kent. Nance demonstrates what it means to be a star both on and off the court. The University of Maine at Fort Kent is extremely proud of the person Nance is.
The Men’s soccer team also had a strong showing at the USCAA Banquet with Aaron Boateng, Nickalous Gayle, Glenroy Osbourne, and Travar McCulloch earning very deserving 1st Team USCAA All-American spots. McCulloch was named the 2019 Men’s Soccer Division 1 Player of the Year based on his solid play at the midfield for the Bengals. McCulloch was a leader for a very strong Bengal team, and he finished the season with 13 goals, four assists, 25 total points, and one game-winning goal. Ryan Merckel, Glenroy Osbourne, and Marcell Holness were named to the All-Academic team for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Leacroft Lettman, as well as Osbourne, McCulloch, and Gayle, were named to the All-Tournament team based on their play at Nationals.
Finally, the Women’s Soccer team, as a part of their historic season, racked up the awards. Hope Shea was named 2nd Team All-American. Tolu Oyeiniyi, Yuliana Sanchez, and Searra Herbert were named 1st Team All-American, and Cameika Davis, Hope Shea, Ruth-Ann Lorman, Searra Herbert, and Shelby Cowin all earned All-Academic awards for their strong grade point averages.
