Volleyball Signs First Two Players
University of Maine at Fort Kent Head Volleyball Coach Jessany Munoz’s first commit for 2018 is Ericka Gutierrez. Gutierrez was a standout player for Harmony Magnet Academy High School and for the SoCal Juniors Volleyball Club. In her Junior and Senior seasons, her Harmony Magnet Academy team won back-to-back league championships. During her time in high school, she showed off her versatility playing multiple positions including middle, opposite, and outside hitter. She produced 103 kills and 67 digs in her two varsity seasons. Even more impressive than her feats on the court are her accomplishments in the classroom. Gutierrez made her school’s honor roll three times, was a three-time Harmony Magnet Academy President’s List Award winner, a California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer, and she won a Character Counts award for her responsibility, her caring, and her high level of integrity. Coach Munoz noted, “Ericka will bring a strong swing offensively in the front row and a power swing with her back row attacks. I look forward to working with her defensively as well.” Ericka’s older sister, Fabiola, also played volleyball under Coach Munoz for the Bengals. The incoming freshman will study nursing.
The next signee for the Bengals is Strathmore, California native Isabella Galang. In her two varsity seasons at Strathmore High School, she racked up the accomplishments as she was team captain and 2016-2017 East Sequoia League MVP, and her 1,258 total assists led her Strathmore High School team to two consecutive East Sequoia League Championships. Like Gutierrez, Galang is another valuable addition to the standout players who played under Coach Job Lara with the SoCal Juniors volleyball club, who have made the move to Fort Kent. Coach Munoz added, “Isabella will bring aggressiveness and leadership to our team. We are very fortunate to have her join our program, and I look forward to watching her progress even more throughout her time with us.” Galang will play setter for The Bengals’ next season and will study Nursing in the Fall.
