University of Maine at Fort Kent Announces Launch of Five New Sport Programs
eSports, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, and Golf expand opportunities for student-athletes

Fort Kent, Maine — The University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) is proud to announce the addition of five new sport offerings: eSports, Softball, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country and Golf.  The expansion further strengthens the university’s commitment to student engagement, competitive excellence, and well-rounded collegiate experiences.

Launching in the upcoming academic year, these programs broaden opportunities for current and prospective students, support growing interest in both traditional and emerging sports, and deepen UMFK’s role as a leader in student-centered athletics in northern Maine.

“We are thrilled to expand our athletic offerings in ways that reflect the evolving interests of our students and the future of collegiate competition,” said Jason Coleman, UMFK Director of Athletics. “These new programs not only enhance our athletic department but also strengthen our recruitment efforts and create more pathways for students to grow, compete, and succeed.”

About the New Sport Programs

eSports: UMFK’s new eSports program will compete in organized collegiate gaming leagues and offer students access to a modern, fully equipped gaming environment. The program will be led by eSports Coach Austin Klokus, who brings strong experience in competitive gaming and student engagement.

Softball: The launch of Women’s Softball expands UMFK’s presence in outdoor competitive athletics, offering female student-athletes a dynamic new opportunity to compete. The team will be coached by Luis Perez, whose passion for player development and team culture is expected to set a strong foundation for the program’s success.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country: These new cross-country programs promote endurance athletics and strengthen UMFK’s connection to the region’s natural outdoor resources. The teams will compete in regional and national events while fostering a culture of health, resilience, and teamwork. Coaching search is underway.

Golf: The addition of golf brings a lifelong sport into UMFK’s athletic lineup, allowing students to compete individually and as a team. Partnerships with local courses will provide high-quality training grounds and build deeper connections with the community. (Coaching search is underway.)

Building on a Strong Foundation

UMFK’s expansion reflects the university’s continued investment in student life and athletics. With the addition of these programs, UMFK further strengthens its identity as a campus that champions opportunity, inclusion and student success.

“This is an exciting moment for UMFK athletics,” Coleman added. “We’re creating opportunities not only for competition but for leadership, personal development, and community engagement.”
