Northern Maine Rivalry Renewed as UMFK Women’s Soccer Visits UMPI
FORT KENT, Maine (Sept. 2, 2026) — The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s soccer team travels to Presque Isle today for a 4 p.m. matchup against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Head Coach Jermaine West and the Bengals enter their first road contest of the season following a pair of home matches against Concordia University on Aug. 19 and 20. UMFK fell 7–0 in both contests and will look to apply the lessons gained from those challenging early-season tests as the Bengals turn their attention to their Northern Maine rival.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to compete against UMPI today. Our players have worked hard throughout preseason, and this game gives us a chance to put that work into action. We know UMPI is a well coached and competitive team, so we’ll need to be disciplined, focused, and committed to playing for one another. Most importantly, we want to represent UMFK with pride, compete the right way, and continue to grow together as a team,” Coach West said.
Today’s contest will be the 2026 season opener for UMPI. It is also the first of two scheduled meetings between the Bengals and Owls this season, with the teams set to meet again Oct. 6 in Fort Kent.
UMFK earned a 5–1 victory over UMPI in the teams’ 2025 meeting at Park Family Field. The Bengals scored four times during the opening half and added a fifth goal in the closing moments. Shadine Rutherford recorded three goals, while Petagay Dixon and Shylah Francis each scored once. Francis also contributed an assist.
The Bengals will look to continue their recent success in the series while earning their first victory of the 2026 campaign. Following today’s game, UMFK will return home to host St. Thomas University on Friday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. and again Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m.
