Athletics Weekend Recap 10/15/18
The University of Maine at Fort Kent Athletics teams had a jam-packed weekend full of exciting travel and competition, as all three Fall sports teams were in action throughout the weekend.
The Women’s Soccer team went .500 this weekend, suffering a 2-1 loss to Bellvue University from Nebraska on Friday evening. The neutral site match was held in Boston, Massachusetts. The Bengals were able to turn things around the following day with a win over Fisher College 3-0 in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon. Tolu Oyeniyi lead the way for UMFK with two goals on the day. Hope Shea also contributed with a goal herself. The Bengals’ record now moves to 6-3-1 with another match on the road trip against a top team at Bryant and Stratton College in Syracuse, New York, on Monday.
The UMFK Men’s soccer team split their two matches this weekend as well. After defeating the University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday, 5-0, the Bengals traveled south to Batavia, New York, to take on the Genesee College Cougars. Sophomore striker Shawn Genus was spectacular for UMFK, scoring both goals for the Bengals to give UMFK the victory 2-0. On Sunday in Syracuse, New York, UMFK lost to the undefeated and number-one-ranked team in the country, Bryant and Stratton College. It was a tough, hard-fought battle that came down to the wire. With neither team able to gain a sizeable advantage, and after four lead changes and three ties, the match ended in double overtime with the Bengals being outlasted by the home Bobcats. Shawn Genus, Marcel Holness, and Travar McCollah all scored for UMFK. The Men’s soccer team record sits at 10-4-2. The Bengals’ next match is against ASA College in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday afternoon.
On Saturday in Presque Isle, Maine, the UMFK Women’s Volleyball team beat rival UMPI in straight sets in both matches. In the first match, the Bengals pounced on the Owls, winning three sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 28-26. In the second match of the day, the Bengals cruised to victory in straight sets again, winning 25-19, 25-15, and 25-15. The UMFK Women’s Volleyball team remains atop the standings with a 20-5 record.
