Inspiring Effort Leads Bengals to Victory
With only six available players for the night, the UMFK Men’s Basketball team put forth an inspiring effort in their home victory against Green Mountain College on Friday evening in The Jungle winning by the score of 66-61.
The Bengals started off hot from downtown connecting on multiple 3-point shots to build a 20 to 5 lead early in the first half. The lead ballooned to 19 points at halftime, however, the second twenty minutes of the contest proved to the country that the Bengals are one of the toughest teams in the nation. Jacob Powell, Pat Pauwels, Jarid Walton, Chance Cole, and Kwame Oduro played as one strong unit and made timely shots down the stretch to earn the W for the Bengals. Kwame Oduro, the clutch Canadian, was a whole grown man tonight, hitting clutch shot after clutch shot right in the face of Eagle defenders in the final five minutes.
The 2-3 zone of UMFK gave the visiting Eagles fits throughout the night, and despite cutting the lead to one possession, the Bengals never lost the lead. Coach Bird’s limited squad put forth a valiant effort and rightfully earned another notch in the win column.
The UMFK Women’s Basketball team pushed their season record to 12-2 tonight with a victory at home against Green Mountain College 71-32. In the first game back after a holiday break, the Bengals picked up right where they left off by creating turnovers, pushing the pace, and knocking down 3-point shots.
Despite a number of injuries, the eight available players all contributed mightily and got themselves in the scoring column.
Lauren Lacey was tremendous from beyond the arc, connecting on 3-point baskets in both halves; she was also a beast on the glass, compiling eight rebounds.
The Bengals will travel to Connecticut on January 8th for a match-up with Wesleyan College as their next game.
