The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s basketball team opened the season with a 61-43 victory over University of Maine at Augusta on Saturday afternoon in a game that was closer than the score would indicate. This was the first contest for women’s basketball and the UMFK athletics department in general in nearly a whole calendar year.

The game was tight early on, with Augusta jumping out to an early lead as the Bengals struggled with turnovers and poor shot selection. Augusta used their height inside to score over the smaller Bengals lineup early in the first quarter to lead 11-3. UMFK started getting their transition game near the end of the first and start of the second quarters going as senior star Ranika Guyton scored all eight UMFK first-quarter points. The Bengals were cold from the outside, going just 2-13 from beyond the arc in the first half. Junior transfer Hannah Jones came in and provided a quick scoring punch to bring the Bengals tied at halftime, 23-23.

The second half was a different story for UMFK on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball. UMFK forced 16 second-half Augusta turnovers and made five three-pointers, four by sharp-shooting senior Keri La. La had 14 of her 16 points in the second half, and Jones put in 12 of her game-high 18. After Augusta tied the game at 41 apiece with 7:13 to go, UMFK outscored the Moose 20-2, including 14-0 over the final 6:26 of the contest. Guyton finished with 18 points and four steals. Junior transfer Sarah Gudeman was all over the floor, corralling 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, and tied up and controlled numerous loose balls all day.

Augusta was led by Madeline Suhr and Sydney LeBlanc, who each scored 11 points.

The Bengals will be back in action on Friday, March 5th, at UMFK for a 5:30 pm contest vs. rival University of Maine Presque Isle. The same two teams will battle again the following day but this time at UMPI at 1:00 pm.
