University of Maine Fort Kent Launches Esports Program and Names Austin Klokus as Head Coach

Fort Kent, Me — The University of Maine at Fort Kent is thrilled to announce the launch of its inaugural esports program, designed to bring students into the fast-growing world of competitive gaming, media, and digital strategy. Leading the charge is newly appointed Head Esports Coach Austin Klokus, a rising star in both esports and sports broadcasting.

A 2024 graduate of Southeastern University with a degree in broadcasting, Klokus was recognized as “Most Outstanding in Major” for his academic and professional achievements. His diverse media career includes serving as the first-ever color commentator at New College of Florida, as well as the lead play-by-play voice for the 2025 NAIA Sun Conference Softball Championship.

As an esports competitor, Klokus earned national recognition as a Top 10 collegiate Madden player in the country by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in 2023 (ranked 8th) and 2024 (ranked 6th). His experience also spans sports photography, content creation, video editing, and graphic design—a combination that positions him to lead a dynamic and modern program focused on both gameplay and media production.

“Esports is one of the most exciting frontiers in education and student engagement,” said Jason Coleman, UMFK Director of Athletics. “With Austin’s unique blend of competitive experience and media expertise, we’re confident this program will not only develop great players, but also future leaders in digital communication.”

The program will offer students the opportunity to compete in popular titles such as Rocket League, Valorant, Madden etc, while learning valuable skills in teamwork, strategy, broadcasting, and content creation. State-of-the-art facilities are being prepared to support the team, with tryouts scheduled to begin in the near future!

“I’m honored to get the chance to build this new program”, said Coach Klokus. “College eSport was a key part of my social and academic success when I was a student, and I’m excited to bring that experience to the students at UMFK. I am also looking forward to getting players involved in college athletics while also giving students opportunities in casting, social media and more”.
