Bengal Basketball Tips Off the 2019-2020 Season
Late October means a lot in Fort Kent; it means leaves on the ground and three-pointers from downtown. To most, it’s Fall season, but to us, it’s ball season. Bengal basketball officially tipped off its season and the campus community was stoked! Both UMFK Basketball teams took on St. Thomas University of New Brunswick, Canada, on Saturday afternoon and both teams came away with victories.
In what was a total team effort with contributions from everyone who saw the floor, the Lady Bengals beat the visiting Tommies 69-44 on Saturday afternoon. Savana Jankowski and Ranika Guyton set the tone early as they were able to score from all three levels, including at the rim, from outside the three-point arc, and at the free-throw line. The Bengals outscored the Tommies 19 to 8 in a fast break-filled second quarter to take a 44-28 halftime lead and never looked back. The Women’s Basketball team will take on Maine Maritime Academy next Sunday in Castine.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Men’s Basketball team got off to a strong start after Jacob Powell hit three three-pointers in the first half and continued to keep a steady lead behind the double-double of Zeke McMurty’s 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Men’s team eventually cruised to a 79-62 victory. The 1-0 Men’s Basketball team will travel down to Merrimack University to take on a NCAA Division 1 opponent in what will be a great test for the young season.
The Women’s Soccer team was also in action this weekend as they traveled through the Green Mountain State of Vermont. On Thursday against St. Michael’s College, the Bengals got off to a slow start and were never able to recover, losing the match 2-0. However, on Sunday against Norwich University, the Bengals bounced back and earned a 3-1 victory behind two goals from Yuliana Sanchez and one goal from Jordan Maxwell. The Bengals’ record now stands at 9-4.
