Bengals beat Rival UMPI
The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team went on a 23-8 run during a 10-minute stretch to end the first half and defeated in-state rival University of Maine at Presque Isle, 82-64, on Wednesday evening. UMFK has won 12 games in a row and moves to 18-6 on the year. UMPI drops to 10-12.
The Bengals led for all 40 minutes of action, but UMPI hung tough for the first 10 minutes and trailed just 17-15. UMPI shot 3-14 during the stretch while the Bengals hit five 3’s.
In the second half, the Owls would get the lead down to 11, 51-40, with a little over 13 minutes to play, but another big run would put the game out of reach. A 20-9 Bengal run over the next seven minutes would increase the lead to 71-49, the largest of the night. Johnathan Caldwell, who hit six long-range bombs, hit three-point shots on three consecutive possessions during the run.
UMFK held UMPI to just 33% shooting and 9-33 (27%) from behind the arc. The Bengals also forced 20 turnovers.
UMFK was led by Caldwell’s 22. Bobby Syvanthong had 19 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Anthony Knight scored 21, on 9-13 shooting. He also had seven rebounds and six steals.
UMPI was led by Freshman Deandre Duncombe, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
