The University of Maine at Fort Kent Women’s Volleyball team opened up their season this weekend on a high note, winning three out of their first four matches. Unfortunately, the Bengals came up short in Saturday night’s championship game, losing to Florida National College in four sets. Prior to Saturday evening’s hiccup, the Bengals started off hot with wins over Carlow University (25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 25-19, 17-15), Johnson and Wales University (20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16) and Penn State Greater Allegheny (20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16). Transfer student and a new addition to the Bengals this season, Rachel Nance, led the way for the team, accumulating 19 kills in the four matches. Senior Haley West also played well for the Bengals tallying up 58 assists at the setter position.

First-year head coach and UMFK alum Selina Castro is pleased with the positive start for the Bengals but knows that the team can strive to reach for even more success. “I’m happy but not satisfied with our start to the season. I’m very proud of the way the team came together and played this weekend, considering the long travel and a lot of new players. I’m excited to continue the season as I see a ton of potential moving forward.” Castro had to say after the latest game.

The Bengals have one more match during this opening road trip on Sunday afternoon against Alfred State College before they return home to Maine, where they will travel a few hours south, from Fort Kent to Bangor, to take on the Husson University Eagles on Saturday, September 8th.
