UMFK Athletics Suffers Inconsistent Weekend
The University of Maine at Fort Kent Men’s Soccer team beat Maine Maritime Academy on Monday afternoon in Castine, Maine. The Bengals jumped out to an early lead after Rodney Witter kicked one in for UMFK off an assist from Shawn Genus in the 10th minute. Minutes later, Genus found himself on the receiving end of a beautiful pass from Ryan Merckel, as Genus headed the ball into the back of the net, increasing the Bengal lead to two. Five minutes later, the Bengals pushed the lead to three as Travar McCollah got himself involved in the scoring action in the 16th minute. Andrew King responded for the Mariners, putting MMA on the board in the 22nd minute. The Bengals took the 3-1 lead into halftime but could not notch another point on the scoreboard in the entire second half. Liam Welch of Maine Maritime cut the Bengal lead to one with his late second-half goal, but the Bengals defense held on for the remaining 12 minutes to come out victorious, 3-2. The Bengals’ record now moves to 8-4, with a game against U-Maine Farmington on Tuesday afternoon being their next match.
In other UMFK Athletics news, the Women’s Soccer team fell to Maine Maritime Academy 2-0 as the oftentimes potent offense of UMFK was never able to get going. That gives the Bengals their first loss of the season, moving their record to 5-1-1 as they prepare for a match against Husson University on Tuesday afternoon in Bangor, Maine.
The Women’s Volleyball team lost to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon, losing both matches (25-16, 25-27, 25-10, 25-13; 25-20, 25-16, 26-24). The Mariners’ size advantage in the middle was tough for the Bengals to handle. However, the Bengals did respond magnificently against Fisher College in Boston, Massachusetts, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bengals recovered nicely and were able to put away the Falcons in both matches (25-8, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14; 25-13, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14).
