UMFK Launches Softball Program with International Coaching Veteran Luis F. Pérez at the Helm
 
																	Fort Kent, Me — 10/16/2025 — The University of Maine at Fort Kent is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever intercollegiate softball program, and with it, the appointment of internationally recognized coach and sports medicine expert Luis F. Pérez as Head Coach. With over two decades of experience at the highest levels of coaching, athletic training, and international competition, Coach Pérez brings a championship pedigree and a holistic approach to athlete development to this historic new chapter.
“This program isn’t just about wins—it’s about building a culture of passion, discipline, and excellence from the ground up,” said Coach Pérez. “We are laying the foundation for something truly special here at UMFK and I’m honored to lead a group of young women who will make history in our first season and beyond.”
Coach Pérez’s resume includes work as an athletic trainer with the Montreal Expos (MLB), Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland Athletics, multiple Puerto Rico Softball Federation championships, and international assignments with Venezuela’s Caribbean Series team and the Puerto Rico Women’s National Team at the Pan American Games. He is a WBSC and IOC-certified instructor in baseball, softball, and Baseball5, and has earned a reputation for molding athletes into well-rounded competitors—on and off the field.
As the most successful coach in Puerto Rican women’s softball history—with over 150 career wins—Coach Pérez is widely respected in international coaching circles for his ability to fuse cutting-edge performance analysis with character-driven leadership. His philosophy integrates technical instruction with injury prevention, strength and conditioning, and mental resilience, preparing student-athletes to thrive at the collegiate level and beyond.
“This program will be about more than just softball,” said Director of Athletics Jason Coleman. “With Coach Pérez’s leadership, we’re building a team that values trust, perseverance, and community—skills that will serve our student-athletes for life.”
Recruitment is underway for the program’s inaugural roster, with the first official season scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026. Prospective student-athletes can expect a rigorous yet supportive environment, rooted in Coach Pérez’s core values of integrity, teamwork, and personal growth.
